Match Plate and Core Sand Pattern

Post by Grantham » Sun Jan 13, 2013 2:00 am

My latest project has been working on a rim
chuck for my lathe, which is like a camera lens
diaphram with fingers

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MeYNLUNk0E4

shows a core box made from Trimplank which is a fraction
of the cost of expanded pvc like Sintra. Also my
approach to sodium silicate and CO2 core sand that
is made more durable and less likely to be damaged
by spraying with a coat of the cheapest rattle can
paint you can find.

The video is edited pretty tight because I can't figure
out how make more than a 10 minute YouTube video.

To answer your question about how many.

I don't know how to attach a jpg of my first attempt of my
ring chuck. The plan is to make a 4 jaw, 6 jaw and 8 jaw.
Like many things in life, improvements can be seen after
making the first one.

Wow!
Thanks for the very nice YouTube presentation. I learned a great deal from your efforts. Very enlightening.

Good to see you back on the board, Rod.

Thank you Harold for the very kind words. As most of
the folks on this board probably are aware, having the
metal working machinery and know how comes in very
handy to support their other hobbies.

Watched your video again and enjoyed it just as much.

You show using a screen to filter the metal.

Can you tell us where you get them and also if there is a different size for the various metals?

I found the Trim Board at the local Home Depot and will be giving it a try.

The mica strainers were purchased from a foundry supply in Missouri probably 20 years ago. They seem to have gone out of business. A search on Google turned up this link:

We bought a pack of 1000, so I have a lifetime supply. If my memory serves, they only cost 3 or 4 cents each. Hope this answers your question. Rod

While I could find them by accessing the link, I could not find pricing for making a purchase. Were you successful in doing so? If so, can you guide me so I can get an idea of cost? They appear to me to be a good idea.

TIA
