Gating and Rizer Question.

Post by Pipescs »

Having never done a ring type mold I am asking for guidance on the way to run Bronze into this project.

It will be a brake ring for a 2 1/2 inch scale Live Steamer. The diameter of the ring is 6 inches.

the plan is to mount them rings on both sides of a match plate. I had thought I would bring the metal into the center with four gates out to the ring. Thin put in four pop-offs around the ring to let the gas escape.

Any suggestions

Saw the second question. It would be junk bronze from the scrap box

There's a lot of different brasses and bronzes out there. You might be in for a bit of trial and error to get the pouring temp right, but you can't complain about the price...

Having cast brass and bronze scrap for years I have found that the round number of 1850-1900 will usually get me a part. Not a sellable, perfect, part by any means, but a part

I do have some silicon bronze ingot left. Question of how good a brake material would it be?

No idea... I'm thinking a yellow leaded brass, but with all the guys on this forum building trains someone must know what's best to use.

As to your drawing, you are feeding at the bottom with a large riser in the middle of the ring?

Yes. I'm sure there are other ways to gate it, but this is how I have done similar in the past.
On the Alloy Avenue form you might want to look up the member HT1, he has a great deal of experience when it comes to gating bronze castings. Never hurts to have a second opinion....

This is a much bigger piece and they don't show the gating, but it may give a few clues
