Have you ever done Machining, Welding, or Grinding?

I fell and injured my shoulder 4 months ago.
Trying to baby it and get it to heal, I finally had to go to the Dr. Monday.
He sent me over to get an MRI. (A big cost)
And I was asked several questions.
One being "Have you ever done Machining, Welding, or Grinding?"
Which I answered "Yes, why does that matter?"
I was told that metal particles might be in my eye and if I have any I can't get a MRI, until I get an X-ray
So I was lead to the X-ray room for a X-ray of my head and eyes. (More cost).
Where they looked the X-ray over closely and said I was good to go.
Looks like another hazard for the work that I had been doing.
Jim

Yup, the MRI will heat up a little hunk of swarf just about red-hot...not something you want going on in your eyeball...

Nyuk-Nyuk! Got ya for an X-ray too. Yes, an MRI will react with metals, like a Hy-cycle furnace, and heat them. This is a concern for people that have pins, screws, and plates in broken limbs.

Any trash that gets into your eyes, is eventually oxidized off from the slightly acidic tears. Steel slivers and the like, will simply dissolve into an orange cloud, and fade away. Several times I have experienced a tech pulling a grinding out of my eye, that left me irritated and painfull for a day or two. Otherwise, just normal body defenses will expell or disolve such invaders given time.

A common high powered rare earth magnet, is used for first aid now. It is placed in close proximity to the eyeball, and flushed with saline. Any free steel fragments are motivated to rise to the magnet. A black light can spot other infringements, that may not be steel, and are manually removed. Ask me how I know...

I dunno, it seems they take medical care to the N'th degree of your pocket, and beyond.

interesting indeed i thought it was related to the magnetic fields attracting stuff to it , hadent thought of the induction heating posibility.

learning something every day

Hadn't thought of the heating ether.
Interesting that during the procedure, I got a bad taste in my mouth.
( Like touching a battery to your tongue to see if it is good)
The fillings had gotten a charge from the Magnet

I have been asking them for years if there is a registry anywhere to sign up on incase one has metal deposits. In case of an accident and your unconsious, I could see that could lead to serious problems.
In my case I have quite a few metal fragments up to 2mm, yes 2 mm, about .080 long in the back of my eye ball. My optometrist just shakes his head, he is the flight surgeon for the local air national gaurd unit. he can visually see them in there, but it does not affect my eyesight. was very lucky for where they ended up at! I have one black spot that floats around in the corner, always catching my self thinking I saw a rat or something run by!

You should look into a medic-alert bracelet, I don't see why you couldn't get one warning of your condition.

I've done some sort of machining, grinding, welding on an ongoing basis for 50+ years and the few times I have had a MRI done they didn't ask about that. Done at very reputable medical facilities too. They did ask about any 'devices' I might have in my body , shrapnel, bullets, metal, that kind of stuff though.

Sounds like another scam to get more medical money out of our hides. Money for the xray. Money for the radiologist to read it and write his/her report.

Yea....I got the same questions, but nothing about machining etc.

(And I didn't blow up.......)

I have heard that tattoos that use iron-based inks can be a problem with MRI's too. But that may be apocryphal. It would be nice if everything we heard was true, but we know better, right?
