After I got out of high school, I got a call from a recruiter. I had been accepted to an Ivy League school. I was polite to him, but I brushed him off. I thought he was totally out of touch with my situation.

In retrospect, I realize that my family and I had an unfortunate view of military service. We thought of it as something people did when they had no other choice. As a result, we don't have much of a share in the credit which is due military families.

I would have been a whole lot better off serving my country than surrounded by a bunch of stoned, spoiled idiots, listening to professors who thought America was the source of all the world's problems.

I was passed over in the Vietnam era. Drafted twice, rejected twice. Bad hearing, and glasses. I have to admit to being isolationist, and Anti Vietnam, as I saw clearly the loss of humanity in those that came back with a lot of baggage and anger. Over time, I watched various events unfold, Biafra, Columbia, and many others. Not my fight I thought, and then the Towers, and the Pentagon, and a failed flight with all the civilians as targets. That made me adament about taking out the Threats, where they sleep, instead of here.

I have lost a list of relatives in foreign and domestic lands, and there is no pride in the loss. It simply ends what they are, and could be. In battles, I believe there is neither Victor, nor Vanquished. Only hallowed ground, and sacred memories.

In the end, I grew up with a sense of rights, that are eroding, after they stopped pledging allegiance, to a flag, an image that stirs my heart, and clouds my eyes at even hockey game. Down deep, I am the Home guard, willing to fight for my families safty, and my neighbors too, against any who would disrupt our life. A patriot to long held ideals of freedom, and fair play.

If this line is condemned as political, I would argue it is neither party, or arguing for change. But it is a love to engage others without rancor, or fear, as it happens otherwise in other parts of our world.

I have the deepest honor, for those that went where I could not, and a sadness at the cost for going, as not all return whole and complete. To those, whatever origins they have, I thank you, for your service.
