WTB - Clausing 5400 lathe back gear

Postby jcfx » Sat Jun 17, 2017 10:36 am

I'm asking for friend who was given a 12" Clausing 5400 lathe
it's the large gear in the head stock right behind the chuck
which I believe is the back gear, is missing a tooth.

Anyone have a spare laying around ?

I cannot help you directly. I don't have that gear. I don't
have the correct manual for that model but in my 5900
series manual, Clausing called that gear the "spindle gear."
South Bend Lathe referred to it as the "bull gear."

The back gear is the cluster gear or combination gear
that engages that gear and the gear on the pulley (or
stepped pulley) for the drive belt.

Good Luck!

Hi There,

I didn't mean to mislead. It is interesting that Clausing wasn't
consistent in their terminology of lathe parts from model to
model.

Seeing you have access to a manual, have you contacted Clausing
Industrial to see if the part is still available and if so, the price?

Good Luck!

No worries on the terminology, I wanted to try the used channels for the gear
before trying Clausing directly.

Hi There,

It couldn't hurt to ask. I didn't see it listed in the 2005 price list
(the most current one I have access to) but that doesn't mean it
isn't available but it doesn't bode well.

Good Luck!

There are more than a few ways to rebuild a tooth on a gear like that. On my lathe one tooth was welded up and then recut to profile. Search out gear repair to find your options. Another way is to find a stock gear with the correct pitch/tooth count/and pitch angle. Turn the teeth and a bit off the old gear. Bore the stock gear out to a press fit and press it on, or a looser fit and pin it.

I can't remember who it was, it might have been mrpete222, kef791 (Keith Fenner) or abom79, did a weld up and recutting of teeth on a gear.

Might be worth looking for that.
