Clausing 5914 Steady rest

Post by Ralph_P »

This is a S/B 13" steady, remachined to fit a Clausing.
(pic. little slow to load, far as I can reduce it.)

Ralph, how did you cut the 70 deg groove?

Post by Matt_Isserstedt »

Just curious, I made a test part of the 70 deg groove with a shaper which seemed good although I made it a little oversized, but still at the correct angle.

Also curious about how you determined the "correct" alignment of the steady so its center is concentric with the spindle...i.e. did you indicate the ID of the casting's hub to get it on center or did you have measurements from "inspection" of the lathe with precision tools to go by...??

TIA

Matt,
I posted a reply to "Hanz" in Mach. tools & tooling, Machining 70* angle, describing how I machined the steady rest. As for measurements I put a center in the tailstock and measured with a square. If you are off a few thousandth you only loose a few thou. on the max. O.D. the steady will hold. If I find I need those few thousandths I'll bore it out.
Good luck with yours, RP
