Have you two guys made your cams yet? I haven't been able to start yet. I decided to make my wife her birthday present for so I have been busy designing and building that. It's a macro focusing rail for taking macro pics.

Paddy, I don't think the cam lobes are in a circular arc. Take a look at the page that shows the cam data. It shows the rise in relation to the degree. Looks like I have going to have to use the rotary table set vertically and use the z axis along with the dro. Afterwards probably smooth with a file. Thats about the only way I will be able to do it with my equipment and experience.

Hello Bob,
I realise that the cams are not circular OK but cams are basically circles with flanks ground on to give the valve opening / closing durations given in the tables. I was thinking that if you knew the base circle of the cam it could be machined on the rotary table, then the flanks ground on. How to do this last part accurately is the problem ! I suppose you could do it with a timing wheel when the engine is assembled or if someone had an accurate template for the lobes it would be a help. I don't know how critical the timings are or how sensitive it is to valve timing.

Here are some photos of the fixture I used to mill the head fins, sorry for the poor photos.
I bored a pocket for a close fit for the head and used the head bolts to hold down.
The package is in the mail Fri. morning.

Hello Ivy,
I machined the pockets and drilled and counterbored the holes first using a rotary table and tilting the head of the mill as necessary. My mill looks similar to yours except I rotated the head to 180* and had the head horizontal in a vice, I did the horizontal fins on the rotary table and this worked well. Unfortunately there are 2 locating/ drive pegs on the 30int spindle and it was these that crashed into the head at my first attempt ! I now have the other 4 heads ready for the fins to be machined with my extended arbor so wish me luck !

Nice set up Ivy, I haven't been able to start mine yet. Before I knew it nice weather hit. It rained this morning so I got some time to finally hang the ceiling fan in the shop the kids got me for Christmas. Keep up the good work guys. By time I get started you guys will probably have yours built and running.))

I was wondering if you ever got started on the Edwards 5, I got slowed down on mine with some more pressing work.
i still have a few more jobs to get out of the way before I can get back on it.

I have posted some photos at Photobucket of the progress on my engine,
I still need to make the cam and buy the gears and bearings.
I have been able to make all the parts without the aid of a rotory
table or indexer so far, but I have not figured out how to make the cam
without one, "yet".
I think the hardest part to make is going to be the intake and exhaust
pipes.
I made a tube bender and wasted a lot of brass tubing, I cant bend the
1/2" rad. without fracturing the tube.

Ivy WOW...totally impressed here. Nice work and looks like you are coming along fine. I haven't bent any tubing like that before so I am not much help with hints on what to do. I have a rotary table and indexer and still not sure how I am going to do it. I am sure with the way you have gotten everything else you will get it figured out. Do you have any pics of your setups when you machined the crankcase and other parts?
