Edwards 5 Radial Engine

Hi all

I have started building the Edwards 5 Radial Engine and I thought I would post the progress as I build it.
I have a few parts finished and posted photos at photobucket. ... %20Engine/

I will post updates as I complete other parts.

The holed are vents, crankcase and oil tank.

Hi Again

I finished the cylinder barrels, screw holes/polished/and finish
turned base dia.
I had a little trouble with the fins, the lathe tool loaded up and
moved a couple of the fins a little bit, if it looks to bad when I
start assembeling them I may make a new one.

Did you cut the cooling fins on a lathe with a parting tool or rotary table and slitting saw in a milll or?????

Hi Randy

I cut them on the lathe, they are .040 wide and .250 deep I ground my own parting tool.
I am working on the heads now and they have fins that will need to be machined with slitting saw and rotary table because of ports.

I have the the heads in the works now, I have to install the valve
guides, machine the seats and intake/exhaust ports.

Thanks for posting the photos, really great work. I began the Edwards engine myself recently as a first major project, I've only done the cylinders and liners so far. My lathe is a lot smaller than yours, an SB 9C, no power crossfeed. I can't tell you how many grooving tools I broke doing the fins ! I was going to tackle the cylinder heads next and here's where I have a question for you. Looking at the diagram, the valve guides seem to be integral with the head but yours seem to be separate parts. What material did you use for them and are they a press fit ?

Hi Paddy

I'm glad to hear from someone else that is building the Edwards 5.
It will be nice to share information and ideas, I used 5/16 o.d. brass for the inserts and threaded one end 5/16-24 x.200 long and tapped the head
leaving an incomplete thread in the hole, I made the inserts extra long so I could hold them with Vice Grips to screw them tight into the incomplete thread.
I also used Lock Tite, Then I set them up in the mill to machine the 5/16 dia. to 1/4 dia., I used a boring head with the tool set to bore an O.D.
Then I turned them over and finished the valve seat and reamed the valve guide.
If this is not clear to you I will make some sketch's for you.
They say a pic. is worth a thousand words.
What machines do you have availible to you, do you have a rotory table ? I dont and I have had to make some holding fixtures, and do some makeshift machining.

Hey Ivy,
Where are the plans or kit for the engine located? I have a Rockwell UM mill but the only lathe running at the moment is the, dare I say it? :shock: Oh yeah, this isn't Nazi D's PM site! :roll: an Atlas 618. Is that enough lathe for the Edwards? Provided I go slowly?

The plans are at "R_and_R_engines Yahoo group", there is no kit just plans, you will have to join to download them.
If you dont want to join I could email it to you, it is 1.7 mb.
