Free drawings IC Engine ?
Free drawings IC Engine ?
Is it at all possible to get free copies of workshop drawings of small IC Engines like 1 ccm or so ??
I belive in sharing, but also respect copyrights so maybe my question is silly
I would however like to make my own engine in my workshop
cheers

Re: Free drawings IC Engine ?
Hello Mogens,
It may be possible. Probable is another story. I do not know if copying a print is technically a problem if it is not sold to the recipient or made availible to the public.
If you do some research at your local library, you may find all kinds of old articles on model engines. Some with plans too.
1cc is equal to about .061 cubic inches. That is a very small engine if I read your 1ccm correctly.
I do not know off hand any public domain offerings in the size range. Popular Mechanics and a few others had some years ago. Strictly IC is another one, but covered under the newer copywrite laws.
The general catagory would be helpful. Farm/Stationary, Aircraft or other transportation power plant use?

Re: Free drawings IC Engine ?
Thank you for your reply
I have been working trough all the old but nice Popular Mechanics, and also have some copies of enginedrawings
However - I have only found engines with ignitionssystems ?! ( read = sparkplugs) - but i would like to make a small dieselengine
Thanks for your help never the less

Re: Free drawings IC Engine ?
More than happy to help out where I can Mogens,
Don't know what good it would be knowing something if I didn't share it along the way, huh?
Here is one of the basic kits I recalled. The Owens Mate is perfect for beginners and it is a 2cc Diesel and it is for Aircraft. You did not specify, but that is my interest and arena I follow.
Owens Mate
Another gent you might be interested in is CE Bowden. Quite a knowledgeable individual and great benefit to the model engine and freeflight hobbies.
Do a search on the web for "model Diesel engines" and see what shows up. You may get lost along the way. So many other interesting sites can direct your attention.

Re: Free drawings IC Engine ?
I have got one , but you must do 3 castings in aluminium.
do you want it?
do you want it?
Re: Free drawings IC Engine ?
All I see there at the link is a pretty cloud pic. No actual site.......what's up?
Re: Free drawings IC Engine ?
Don't think you let it load long enough? It is a background of clouds and a few large photos.
An excellent list of who's who in model engine work.
Here is the links page for Motor Boys.

Hey DC
Thanks again
I have studied the link, and believe that this is just wath I want to build - how do I optain drawings
My interest is most the process of building , ( maybe redesign) a working engine
TIA
Mogens
( PS Here i Denmark we use the metric system )

Re: Free drawings IC Engine ?
In my post to Anonymous(below), I left a link to the home page of the Motor Boys. It has David Owens email address. You might ask him for local sources. Lots of other info as well.
It does say that there is no more direct source for the extrusion used on the crank case, but that should be the least of a problem to hog it out of barstock as the rest of the engine. Some details on this site give accounts in the machining process.
Strictly IC had an article on it, but I do not recall if prints were included. Vol 26,27 and 28 is what shows up as a construction article series for the mate.
You could do this half scale to get down to the 1cc you were thinking of.
It would sure be a cute lil'bugger!

Re: Free drawings IC Engine ?
OK, that is a CI engine, but it has a carburetor. Whats up with that?
I have seen these "diesel" versions before, but have never been clear on the way they work. I am told that you adjust the compression with the screw and a counter-piston, but .............
Seems like they also use an odd fuel, full of ether or some such, as I was also told.
Can anyone explain the deal with these diesels that sort of aren't diesels?

Re: Free drawings IC Engine ?
Hello JT,
These engines do run as a true diesel 2 stroke does. The Contrapiston is used to adjust the timing by varying the compression ratio ever so slightly. The ether and kerosene are a highly flamable mixture, set off by merely compressing it.
The carburetor is the cheapest form of fuel delivery at this size. Besides the fact that these need crankcase induction to lubricate the lower end.
Direct injection would not be feasible for most freeflight applications. I have also heard it is nearly impossible to scale some attributes. This may be one of them.
The benefits of more power out of smaller engines and burn less fuel are impressive. If they smelled better, they'ld have more friends!
