Another Sparkplug Question

Post by Ken »

Doug:
Do you know if there any difference in 1% Thoriated Tungsten vs 2% when used for sparkplug electrodes?

Hello Ken,

I would not think there is much benefit to using Thoriated Tungsten. Not to mention its hazards. Platinum would be nice though unrealistic.

The difference is 1% Thoria?

In the realm of welding at low voltage and high current, it shows the benefit in passing electrons efficiently. There are better alternatives to reduce exposure to radio active alpha particles available today,

Not the same issue for a spark plug conductor at high voltage and low current, with the exception of less erosion compared to steel. The temperature may be maintained a bit higher to burn off any fouling too.

That is about all I can tell you without a detailed research of my own.
