Newbie need help to setup B2229 for metric thread

Post by PopolZ »

Hi guys!

I have to turn some metric thread with my B2229 and I can't setup the gears to save my life...

I've installed the A 48T, B/C 127/120T and the D well is my problem....

The B2229 manual is just useless and the Grizzly G9729 is more helpful but I'm running into a problem.

The 127T gear is against the 24T hub.

If I turn the gear around and get it to mesh it doesn't look right to me with the nut partially engaged...

Can someone provide me a picture of your gears setup for 1mm pitch thread?

Thanks for the help!

Loosening up the screw and adjusting the arm should allow things to mesh properly

It wont... the 127T always hit the hub of the 24T unless I have a funky mesh with the 24t gear half engaged on the shaft.

On my B2229 the 24T gear does not have a extended hub but there is a small ferrule used as a spacer when cutting metric threads. I purchased the machine used so do not know if this is original or was made by they previous owner to overcome the issue you are having.

Glenn: I have 2x 24T, one with a hub and one without.

But I figured it out... I took the spacer out from behind the adjustment arm and put it on the D gear shaft. Pushed the adjustment arm closer to the machine. Removed one of the shims from gear A.
All the gears moved back and it gave me enough space to get the nut fully on the shaft and the spacer gives me an equal backing for the gear.

I had the same problem with my Grizzly G4015Z. I ended up turning the non-toothed portion of the gear down to approximately 1/8" wall thickness and it fit fine. I also ordered a spare 24T gear in case I really messed up. But I didn't. If I followed the instructions correctly, you should see a photo.

Thanks Keith! I thought of doing that but I'd have to machine it to ~1/16th or a tad less.

Anyways long story short I did a test thread on a different rod size and when I reached my tap/die kit to test my thread I found out I had the die I needed all along to do my part....... and not the one I needed to test my test thread *facepalm*

Lesson learned? keep the tools offlimits after a night shift.
