My Maximat V10 Mentor came with a set of quick change tool holders of a design not common in the USA.
I have a set of Aloris Chinese copy, brand new that I was using on my old lathe that I sold, a Grizzly G4000.
These holders are to tall for this lathe although the V10 is one inch bigger than he 9" Grizzly.
For some reason they designed these machines with a .750 tool height (controlled by the compound rest height) and also they use a single post unlike older American designs like South Bend that they have a slot giving far more options at positioning the tool.
On these machines you can only rotate, that's it !
I managed to find in Australia some new extra holders but boring bar holders are nowhere to be found.
So, I had to start building my own starting with one that can hold my set of .500" shank standard boring bars.
Later on I am planning to build a .625" and a .750". I don't think that I would ever use anything bigger than .750".
I used aluminum because is all the material I have at hand and my hobby budget is tight.
If I come across some good hot-rolled steel I may make one with that material. As for now the aluminum one fills my needs just fine.
The pictures show the different steps I took to complete this boring bar.

Re: Building a Boring Bar Holder
have you encountered any problems with the fact that it is made out of aluminum?
one thing i noticed, you used a boring bar to make a boring bar holder, what did you hold the boring bar with?!

I held the bar with a regular tool bit holder.niedz wrote:have you encountered any problems with the fact that it is made out of aluminum?

I made the bar holder for bars that do not fit in a regular holder's slot.
There are no problems, only solutions.
