Tom Artzburger makes very nice 2 1/2" pockets, which I have used on 3" scale equipment and looks reasonable.

They are pricey when you're buying enough for an entire car, at $8 ea and $7 per set of custom U-bolts required for each one, but they are very nice. One advantage is that he can give you any length of U-bolt depending on the thickness of the side of your car.

Because of the cost I have only used them on one car. Here are some photos.

I bought mine from Roll Models; they are injection molded plastic and look very much like the pictures above. I think you can choose between brown and black. I made my own U-Bolts; I had an article on them in Live Steam magazine in the July/August 2012 issue. If you cannot find that, I can send a copy, just PM me. Kimball

Mike, good to know who made your pockets. I admired your work in your build thread? Very nice indeed. Iam thinking of building two or three cars, each 10 or 12’ long. So cost is a bit of a factor. Yours are really nice, authentic looking castings. Superb actually!

kimball, do you think these Roll Model pockets are useful in structural applications? E.g. holding vertical beams that would support actual wood plank sided ballast car sides and ends?

Thanks

I'm thinking you've got to have steel/alum to support some real side loads, but I'm interested to see how the Roll Models ones hold up.

I stumbled upon a few sets on ebay. I have no connection to them. See link.

I have been using Roll models "plastic" stake pockets for years.
They are fiberglass reinforced plastic. I tried breaking them with a hammer .
RMI also carries the the U bolts for them.
