Dave,
How many motors were you able to run from this at one time and did you use an idler motor to stabilize the output ?

I just used it to make my belt driven mill variable speed. I have a rotary converter that I run the shop on 10hp and I have a 25hp as well.

just as a side note...if you have never worked with these boxes and are thinking 'rotary converter replacement'....

you need to be VERY CAREFUL about running more than one motor at a time from a VFD...since you should NOT start / stop the motor by disconnecting the motor from the VFD...you start / stop the motor from the VFD control panel on / off switch.

disconnecting the line / motor from the VFD can lead to some very interesting demonstrations of 'letting the smoke out of your electronics'.

Bill: Depends on the quality of the drive. The "cheap" drives yes. A friend of mine does this with his shop...turn on the drive when he walks in the door, then turns on the BP with the For/Rev switch. Same with the lathe. Only once was the smoke and parts let out of the VFD...direct lightning strike.

I have a couple of industrial customers that supply multiple motors off one drive. The controls are set up that at least one motor has to be running
at all times. One drive has 5 motors on it and all motors are the same horsepower and rpm. The VFD is sized for the total hp.

The drives are Toshiba, Allen Bradley and WEG. As I said, not the cheap ones.

Not that I recommend any of this, but it can be done.
