Re: 3/4 Yankee Shop Atlantic - in Pieces
he is assuming that parts are interchangeable from one loco to another.....bad assumption in our hobby....
years ago a friend purchased a CP173 BOLT TOGETHER KIT from RRSC in California (back in the 80's).
Well....putting it together was FAR FROM bolt-together.
we EVENTUALLY got it assembled and running, but unless you were a machinist there was no way you were going to get the chassis assembled, let alone running.

Too many things going on to bother listing them.

Bill, was the boiler advertised as silos soldered? And do you know the origins of the Atlantic? As long as it isn't leaking ,.. what's the problem?

Re: 3/4 Yankee Shop Atlantic - in Pieces
it appears to be sil-phos based on the color of the joints and way it builds up in areas.
if it passes a hydro, it will be safe for a while...not like it will explode in the middle in of a run-day...
the problem is that the sil-phos breaks down in the presence of high temperature sulfur and basically becomes a sponge before it finally lets go. Repairing it is virtually impossible.
so...is it safe from day one...sure....but not for long.
Might be a few years before it starts to give trouble, but then it does....need a new boiler.
unless you run it on wood or propane (no sulfur)

This is the second engine I have seen this particular seller rip apart, I know the last one was purchased as a lot and is being re-assembled. Its sad to tear something apart that could be sold to someone whole.

The Atlantic is now being offered as a complete set of parts.

He is adamat about his prices and techniques. It should be illegal what he is doing disassembling locomotives to make a buck off the hopes that it will pull someones heartrings enough to buy it.
Re: 3/4 Yankee Shop Atlantic - in Pieces
Simply too high priced, in my experience. No chance of my purchasing it.
I hope for a good ending for the locomotive.

There is a guy on ebay that disassembles vintage guitars and sells off the parts.
Makes me sick, but there's nothing that can be done about it.

At least the locomotive in individual parts gives a peek into places where a complete locomotive would be hiding information. What gathers my attention is the box like affair on the front of the forward tube sheet. Is this some sort of throttle arrangement used in the smaller scales? Have never seen anything quite like it.

The box like affair is the superheater header.Rwilliams wrote: ↑Wed Aug 21, 2019 12:35 am At least the locomotive in individual parts gives a peek into places where a complete locomotive would be hiding information.
