I'm getting ready to release my first full length Live steam documentary disc, and trying to gauge interest for various options. The mandatory AACS fees for Blu Ray replication are making me second guess whether or not I need to bother with a large run.

Many people are now buying and viewing videos and movies online. The upside of that is that it is instantaneous and convenient. The downside is you have no physical media in your possession. This crowd is different than your typical teenager or twenty something, so I'd like to find out where you're all at. I am going to try to offer it in all the above formats but want to know what I should concentrate on first.

I voted for DVD. Plays on anything. Widest possible audience. I don't have any equipment that plays high-def, so I couldn't use blu-ray anyway. How about VHS?

You might want to consider blu-ray as an option, though, as dvd resolution probably doesn't look good on a really big screen.

The fact that you don't have a blu-ray player is what I am most interested in. The % of people who do vs. who don't in this crowd. I have one and I love it, but it also requires an HDTV to appreciate, a total systems upgrade that I am guessing many older folks aren't interested in. blu Ray has been slow to adopt due to the total combined expensive and 'good enough' attitude of most folks regarding DVD. But man, does live steam look great in HD. That being said, to really appreciate it, you need a large set or a medium sized TV set that is placed close to you. If you have a medium or small set all the way across the living room, you will not experience the benefits of the extra resolution. That is a point that many people fail to realize. I have a small room with a 40" LCD HDTV that is about 6 feet away. It's perfect.

There is also a shift to downloadable content that will eventually supplant blu-ray. But for now, blu ray has the highest data rate and quality and reliable playback.

The video will be available on DVD and blu ray no matter what, so it's not an 'either or' thing. But the survey helps gauge interest for how much of each I should print in an initial batch.

Go with the modern trend, Blue Ray. (my vote) I dont have it. But I am kindof a bottom feeder anyway, buying large screen tube sets yet, as they are replaced by LCDs. That puts me a few years behind the curve. Having said that, can you imagine putting out a tape in BETA because of its advantages? (BETA was supposed to be technically better than VHS, In the short run they lost out in marketing early on, and now who cares? The technology has moved way beyond.)

I felt like the Jetsons when I got an LCD for my computer, (new from Tiger). Still it was on sale.

I too would go with DVD if it were me. I do not have HD either and I would bet that most of the LS community probably being an older crowd, would at best have just standard DVD.

I just saw a nice brand name Blue-Ray player for $88 at Walmart today.

May have to change my vote, we just brought a 3D - blu ray player and a 1920-dpi HD LED 3D tv, replacing our 1080dpi HD plasma....I cant believe our crisp and clean, clear the Blu ray is in HD, the details is nothing short of amazing...our Plasma was top end when we brought it, but this new technology is aw-inspiring
