2-1/2" Scale Consolidated Safety Valve

Post by JKreider »

2-1/2” Scale Safety Valve
Shown in the photo is a 2-1/2” scale model of a Consolidated safety valve. This valve was built by Tom Miller and Bart Pond who have allowed Bruno Platzer and me to copy it in an effort to make it available to 2-1/2” scale, plus, live steamers.
I’m presenting this here in an effort to gauge interest in such a product.
We are thinking that the valve will retail for around $450, and perhaps less if the quantity is sufficient, and would be available during the first quarter of 2014.
We will require a 50% deposit at the point where we actually start making them.
Please PM me or get in touch with Bruno if you are interested.

Jim, I might be interested. What are the rough dimensions of the valve and what threads would you guys be selling them with?

Would also like dimensions posted. Also, do they have higher flow volume than an equivalent 1 1/2" scale safety, or internally are they similar.

Dimensions are as follows;

Height is 2.30” from the boiler fitting seat face to top minus the adjustment bolt.
Diameter of the lower part of the case is 1.34” inside of the case lip.
Top part of the case (spring housing) is .84” diameter.
Bottom hex is 1.18” across the flats.

The boiler fitting is 5/8” total length including the 3/8” NPT boiler interface threaded boss.
The boiler fitting has a 1.18” hex across the flats. Hex portion is .19” long.

This is not a 2-1/2” scale valve covering 1-1/2” scale internals. This valve is fully redesigned to the larger scale so the flow capacity has to be substantial over a 1-1/2” scale valve.

Hello Everyone,
Assuming Jim can accurately replicate what Bart and I built, these valves work GREAT. You have heard safety valves called "pop" valves. Well these pop so hard it is scary. They are very efficient. I have never been able to lift more than one valve no matter how hard I fire my K-36. We only made the valves for our engines plus a few spares that we eventually sold. Bruno and Bill Dobbs each have three on their K-36's and there are some on some of the C-16's Peter Moseley and friends built. I hope Jim gets enough interest to produce these valves. It would be great for the hobby.

Jim, i'm interested in the safety's that you looking to produce, i'm building one of the C-21 that Tom Artzberger is producing but it will be a while before I can purchase any. I just received a call from Marty Knox that my boiler will be done in two weeks and I have to finish paying for the boiler ! I think you can see where my money will be going for now.
please keep me in mind for a future purchase.

Thank you

An update on the production of these safety valves:

At the present time we have not sold enough to break even on the project. We need to sell at least six more valves to go ahead with production so please let Bruno know ASAP if you are interested. Otherwise we will not make them.

HI Jim,
That looks like a great accessory for the big models of small engines group.
Did you mean 1st Qtr. 2015? 1st Qtr. 2014 is long gone.
