Seeking curly spoke a 4 hole industrial-style wheels

Post by HomeRailwayJournal »

Hi folks.

I'm looking for wheels like these in 4-5-6" diameters for an upcoming project (and perhaps article).

I'd like to order a ready made part rather than make my own patterns and have them run.

Thanks!

Chris

PM research has these in 3 1/2" diameter, if that is close enough.

The FWC-S12B is a bronze flywheel in that style.

Thanks for the link Herman, but I don't think there is enough material to give a proper wheel flange profile. I may end up making my own after all.

Look at the flywheel offerings of Martin Model and Pattern. There might be something there you can use.

Blackgates Engineering (www.blackgates.co.uk) do 4 7/8" dia curly spoke wagon wheel castings. I bought a set a few years back - nice castings and at 75 GBP a set in 2010 a lot cheaper than Reeves. Hope this helps. Ray.

Chris,
That is an easy job for a CNC mill.
Do you have drawings or models?
I can post pictures of some in a day or so.

Just a thought, if the fly wheels do not have enough material to turn a flanged wheel one could always put steel tires on to them. Allitle more work, but might be cheeper than a costom casting order.

Here are some "curley spoke wheels" cnc milled.

Curley spoke wheels were made curley to reduce the tendency
of straight spokes to crack as castings cooled.

Have seen some beautiful loco wheels with
cracked spokes form being removed from the mold too fast.
