Cushman Hit-n-Miss Engine

Post by sznnchstn »

I have a 4 HP Cushman (binder engine) engine, serial # 32606. I'd like to know the year of manufacture and the color it is supposed to be. It is not listed in the book I have. Can anyone help me? Thx.

There are no surviving factory serial number lists for Cushman engines. There is a fellow by the name of Brown who lives in Nebraska that maintains a Cushman registry. If you are interested I might be able to put you in touch with him. Be prepared, however, to send him information on your engine.

That said, I have a Cushman binder engine with a serial number in the low 14,000 range. It is estimated to be of 1914-1915 vintage. I'm not sure how to estimate the age of yours. A good bet would be for you to go to Harry Matthew's Smokstak and register there. It is a forum inhabited by very knowledgeable engine folk. Post your questions there and you'll get all the help you need.

If that link doesn't work, go to this page and click on "Smokstak."

For your enlightenment, Cushman binder engines are not hit and miss. They are throttle governed.

Congratulations upon getting this interesting little engine. When you get it running, adjust the governor to a slow RPM, otherwise it is likely to hop around quite a bit. When running them just for show, they don't need to run very fast.

I forgot to reply to your question about color.

Binder engines are usually seen painted a dark green. According to Wendel's Notebook, they are duPont #62713
