Morris switcher trucks

Post by Nik3v »

So now that we worked out that one 8hp kohler should be sufficient for my PA I have a question about my other project.

Several years ago I purchased a set of Morris switcher trucks with the intention of build an electric powered unit. Does anyone have pictures, drawings, or suggestions as to the drive shaft set up? Splined shaft and U-joints maybe to get enough swing from frame to truck?

Planned a center running shaft with sprocket driven from golf cart or similar electric motor.

Thanks in advance

Lee Wright used drive shafts with Tol-o-matic right angle gear boxes on his locomotives. You can probably find some helpful photos here:

Daris,
Thanks for the suggestion. Mr. wright was a master. The IBLS has a wandering locomotive book here http://ibls.org/files/Wandering_Locomot ... 130714.pdf
It has most of that same info. I’ve read through that as well as the link you included.
The exact info I can’t seem to find is.....
I have tolomatics on the trucks with a U joint coupling, then U joints on the end of the drive shaft, but what about the connection between them? I know it needs to slide like a spline shaft to allow the trucks to swivel. What length of slip and what type are people using?
Also are the trucks being chained to limit swivel and shaft disengagement during a derailment.
I used to see steam engine tender trucks with chains like I’m thinking.
