Making ladder rungs and grabs for a boxcar

Post by Raymbo »

Here is a quick video of how I made some ladder rungs and grabs for my 1.6 scale 1929 Pullman Standard outside braced Soo Line 40 ton boxcar. I used 3/32 inch steel welding rod, aluminum seems to get bent and broken so easily, and 1/8 inch rod is actually too large to be scale.

I do not have much for machine tools, a Delta 10" table saw, some drills and a drill press, belt sander and a few other hand tools.

Thank you very much. Not having a mill has made railroading tougher, but no less fun.

This is exactly the type of instructional video we need! Terrific.
How many viewers remember Bullwinkle and Rocket J. Squirrel?
As a point of saving money, wait until the election is over, then use the wire in old political signs to make the rungs. Generally the winners don't care and the losers are humiliated.

That would be "Wassamatta U." Here it is decades later and some of still remember this stuff. "And now, something you'll really like!"

PRR, the sign wire is too heavy for 1.6 scale, but would probably work on 2.5 to 3 inch scale, then of course there are very few modeling in these scales.

My brother is 58 years young and still watches cartoons on Saturday mornings... but then again we still play with trains!

Here are a couple of photos of what I am building.

The stencils will be done tomorrow and I will paint the graphics on tomorrow evening. Then some moderate weathering and it is ready to follow the engine.........

VERY NICE model! Other than the natural paint peeling from your same photo, your car will make a fine addition to your fleet of rolling stock. Take lots of photos in the "just rolled out of the shop" state...it may not look that nice in the future. Carl B.
