Post by Glenn Brooks »

Ok, so this is definitely 'Riding Scale'. Just boarded.

Anybody recognize the loco?

Here's a couple more. One of the pedestals on one truck under the Pullman cars is dated 1893.

Didn't do too much to change the old California Western paint scheme, either.

This was our first trip on the Napa Valley train. Iam not very familiar with the Cal Western, although did learn the rolling stock were all built by Pullman in 1914 for the Northern Pacific RR. Sometime in the 1960's the cars were sold to a ski excursion train company in Colorado, then early 1980's bought by the Napa Valley RR for service along the Napa wine trail. Saw three additional F3's parked in their yard across the river from Old town Napa this evening. So they have at least four F-3's plus one slug, and the one RS 11 that Mike identified.

Pretty interesting 3 hour ride RT from Napa out to St. Helena and back. They did a very nice job restoring the passenger cars to service -well maintained and lots of varnish in the interior.

Glenn:
Might those "F3s" actually be ALCO units too?
They used to haul that train with FA units. I think they like ALCOs!

Russs,

Maybe so! I was wondering about that also. Never seen an ALCO in person, just skinney little photos. Up close, from the ground, the cab design seems different... more elongated.

Got a second look at the motive power, from track side, on day 3 of our trip to Napa valley. Locos are definitely Alco's, not F3s.
