Hello all,

Does anyone on the forum have experience with using an Etek DC motor (formerly made by Briggs & Stratton, now made by another firm) as the motive power for a large 1.5" scale electric engine (such as a GP9, RS3 or the such)? For those who are not sure what I'm talking about, check out the link below.

http://www.robotmarketplace.com/products/ETK-ETEKR.html

Any and all experience/advice/suggestions are welcome.

Supposedly, this is the way to go if you want to pull a lot, and indeed in the description given on the website above, they specifically list "ride on trains" as one of the primary uses of this motor. The specs are certainly very impressive, and it was recommended to me that a 300 amp 4QD controller be used to drive it.

TIA!

Sincerely,
Adam

Lee Wright used the B&S Etek's when he re-powered his road diesels. He held them out to be good motors. The only downside I've heard of was some hearsay about them burning out early, so you might want to research that.

No experience with this particular motor, but how many motors were you planning to use? Most electric powered locos with separate trucks use one motor per truck, or separate motors for each axle. This particular motor (8 hp, 30 lbs) seems awfully large to be used like that.

As I remember them, they're way too big to put down in the trucks. Lee's website showed that he used u joints, power shafts, and belts to transmit power from the motor up in the body down to the trucks.
