Do you have the ability harden and grind the drill rod? Not to mention boring the holes for bearings. You can give it a shot and see how it goes.

I would have to have those parts made for me. I can pretty much do everything else, though.

Another thing you might try is a carbide roller on the end of a boring bar and roller the bore for size in a lathe. I have heard of this being done also, but never tried it.

I have been thinking about this. I may be able to use it to do the final finish on the outside of the aluminum instruments. It would be really nice to find a better way to get that done.

so what we have is 2 wedges coming together in opposite directions. for lack of a differient approach taper them with a tool post grinder, harden then build a cage to hold them. got it.

for the external roller you mite want to look at a camfollower mounted on a tool holder. :?:

Or something similar to a scissor knurling tool, but with precision bearings in place of the knurl wheels.

Try a search for "cold working".

So, if I buy the 5/8" tube expander on ebay, that is supposed to make the inside diameter 5/8" correct? It looks like they have some adjustments, there is a long bar with a brass nut on the end, but that is a raw guess. (wishful thinking?) I looked and looked, but I was not able to find a schematic or a description of how to use them on the internet.
