I don't see why you couldn't run a belt smaller than the wheel width. But you often have problems working around features, so that at the least would be worth considering. But then, I guess you could make the machine to something like say 3" width, though not necessary as long as sufficient clearance were provided, and you still had sufficient drive friction. Then the contact wheels could be swapped with an appropriate width along with the belt. Swapping contact surfaces on these "KMG" style grinders is very quick, though you would have to keep the desired attachments on hand along with belts. 2" width seems to be the happy medium for the vast majority of users, though I'm still anxious to get my G8 finished, so...

With that said, I really got spoiled using a old 1950's era 6" wide Vertical
that had a 36" opening to work in. we use to keep 60 grit Carborundum belts
in it. What a GREAT BEAST that was. I think it was made by the original
Famco Company in Kenosha WI., but I can't find anything on that unit.

I know, I had the same response when I first saw it. I brought it home and added it to my to-do projects just before everything went side ways a few years back. I'm hoping to finally get it done in the near future.

If you want metal removal, check this out. I can tell you that they are fast! They are used in the foundry for gate removal, blending and polishing.

Bader makes great stuff, and their "bench model" looks like a fairly typical belt grinder along the lines of the KMG style. Beefy.

Just checked the price of a Bader. About $1700. I still wonder: where does all that money go? Three wheels and couple of castings.

I have made a number of 2 x 72 inch belt grinders for knife makers. I have one in my shop for general metal fabrication. Mine has a large drive wheel because I am using a 3ph 1100 rpm motor. http://www.thekilmerplace.com/beltgrinder.html

The bearings came. Now I have actually run into more questions on this simple part.
I have to set these things into the ends of the wheel. I learned that I need a spacer inside the wheel bore, between the inner races of the bearings. The bearings have to rest against it in order to support the inner races against the inward pressure of whatever holds the wheel in place. But I was expecting to have the bearing outer races rest against the wheel.
If the spacer is going to push outward on the inner races, I don't think the outer races can rest on the wheel surface, because if they do, it will hold the bearings so far apart the inner races won't touch the spacer ends.
Does this mean the outer races shouldn't be up against the wheel body?
After this I have to figure out how to mount the wheel. It will go between two flat pieces of metal, obviously. But the flat pieces can't touch the wheel sides, or the wheel won't turn. So something has to go between the inner races and the flat pieces of metal. Washers?
