$1.50 each for American made quality twist drills, is too much? How is that overpaying? As others have suggested, have a few spares around.

If I wanted to pay almost six dollars to replace one size bit, I would not have posted anything. This is all laid out fairly explicitly in the original question and other responses.

The Wholesale Tools idea is great. Greatly appreciated. Also, Travers has quite a few single bits.

I usually buy from https://drillsandcutters.com

If you're on their email list, every so often they'll email out a discount code and I'll look and see what I need and place an order.

That's pretty cool.

I tried to figure out what the difference between their "Drill America" and "Qualtech" bits is, but I haven't gotten anywhere yet. I did find out that Drill America makes Qualtech bits, and that Drill America has plants in the US, Europe, and...ASIA!

Can't be any more Chinese than the bits I'm replacing, though.

At the drillsandcutters site go to the shop by brand listing. They have a dozen or so companies listed, American Carbide, KEO, hougen.

Another of the 101 uses for old drill bit shanks.

I couldn't find my pin spanner for my old 4-1/2" grinder this morning. Go figure.

So, I measured & made one. A liitle drillin'....a little millin'....

The hold up well. I've built many the same way for smaller hydraulic cylinders & other oddball things.
