How Do I Get These 10 mm Nuts Undone On A Mobile Base?
Hi,
I've bought a Draper Mortiser for my woodwork. I also bought a Clarke mobile base. I had to cut some of the sections off this with a small angle grinder so would be a good fit. Tightened up all the nuts as tight as I could get them.Without the mortiser resting on the mobile base, I found it has a quite pronounced wobble on one corner. I know someone who has a metal lathe and mill, model railway enthusiast.
He suggested loosing of all the nuts put the mortiser back on the base so it would sort of find its own level, then tighten up all the nuts. I thought could get a 10 mm deep offset spanner to get to the nuts on the inside of the frame next to the side of the morticer loose.
Only thing I could think of to do this was using a deep offset spanner. He found some spanners that were only 15 degree offset. As you can see from photo the spanner on one of the nuts it would not clear the side of the morticer.
Have anyone any ideas?
Thank you,
Peter.

Some ideas.....
Could you fit a tappet wrench in there? They are open ended, and half or less than the thickness of a regular spanner.
Buy an inexpensive spanner, and bend and/or grind it to fit the task. I've don't that many times.
Get some non-plated nuts, and tack weld them to the inside of the frame.
Possibly the standard nuts could be replaced with some quality grade clip on nuts.

Won't keps nuts solve the problem? Once they contact the mobile base, they will hold themselves steady while you tighten from the other side.
Edit: okay, now I see the "un" in front of "done." Never mind.

You might try turning all the nuts/bolts around. Nut on the outside.
You can hold the bolt head with an open end wrench and turn the nut with another wrench or socket. All of the open end wrenches have straight open ends, while the box ends are all off set, with the exception of tappet wrenches as mentioned above.

A combination wrench as shown, doesn't have the deep reach of true box end offset wrenches. There are many styles of these.

As I see it your problem is that you want to be able to tighten the bolts with the mortiser in the rack, which severely limits access to the nuts.
So; put loc-washers under the nuts.
Only loosen the bolts slightly, so there's still a slight tension on them.
Adjust your base rack, then tighten. the loc-washers will keep the nuts from spinning.

Hit the bolts with an impact wrench. Wedge a screwdriver, chisel, etc against the nut if you have to.
Didn't the weight of the machine spring the mobile base into alignment?

Kneel on the base to get all four wheels on the floor while tightening the bolts.
Then place the mortiser on the base.
Then place the mortiser on the base.

Impact wrench on a 6mm [1/4"] bolt?
They must have improved a lot since I last used them!

Well the original poster seems to have disappeared, probably got better advice somewhere else...
And now that we've drifted totally off topic, why did he change the slave cylinder on the side of the road? He happened to have a spare one in the car when the original failed and couldn't drive without it?
Good trick getting the cop to help.
I have driven without a clutch once or twice.
Motorbikes as well.
Not fun in traffic.

I dislike adjustable bases. If it were up to me, I would make sure the base is properly adjusted to the machine, clamp it true and weld it up. After all, it will only be used for that one machine. Bolts vibrate lose over time. Any machines I have on a mobile base, are welded up from steel angle.
