A while back I put this on the hobby machinist forum with no one there having the needed info so here goes.
I inherited an Elite tool and cutter grinder from my dad when he decided he needs the room for other items. There is an instruction manual but some details are vague at best. I have uploaded 5 photo's of the, I hope, pertinent details for the drill grinding attachment.
I also have the Norton Tool Room grinding book that shows a similar attachment on a pedestal grinder but no details on the operation and settings. It also looks like I may be missing the holder for the drill bit.
So my questions are,
What are the graduations for and do they directly relate to say a 128 degree drill bit.
Where and what part of the drill bit sits against the guide and how close should the end of the bit be to the point on the guide.
Are the numbers 13.22 on the guide important.
Are there photo's somewhere to help clarify the use of this tool.
Spent some time the other day with a good drill bit and tried all the combinations I could thing of and none followed the contour of the drill tip.
Thanks.

Drill sharpener attachment help
Re: Drill sharpener attachment help
"angular totation" sounds like chinglish.
This is for drills 1/2" and larger. There are quite a few sources for info on sharpening drills that would be better than that manual. Try this you-tube link for one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cqn2VPGYA9c. After watching it using that tool to help you set the angle to grind at will make more sense.

Re: Drill sharpener attachment help
Wes,
Thanks for your input.
I have watched that video, as well as many others of his, and it is very helpful. Especially for getting destroyed bits back close to the correct geometry.
I have the Darex setup that my dad sent along with the grinder and it will hold up to 3/4" drills. See attached photo's found on the net. The setup I am using is mounted on a piece of 1/2" plate and bolts to the table of the grinder. Works nice.
I would really like to learn how to use this attachment. Since it is built into the machine, once I can get it figured out it should make grinding the big bits a breeze.

I have a M5, and the early ones set up the same.

Re: Drill sharpener attachment help
Pennsy fan, thanks for the link to the Darex manual. Good to know I have been using the unit correctly as per the manufacturer.
I am still hoping for definitive information to the attachment in the first thread. That unit has me stumped. Surely there is a setting that puts the drill bit in the correct relationship with the grinding wheel. In fact, it would seem any setting should work only giving different grind and relief angles. So far when a good drill is set in the holder it appears the lip angle would be negative instead of positive.

Re: Drill sharpener attachment help
Is it so different from the version made by Kalamazoo that you can't figure it out?

The word, "totation" in the original instructs is obviously a typo. Rotation would be the proper spelling.

Re: Drill sharpener attachment help
Hello Reggie,
Thanks for the link. Downloaded and studied the manual. The Kalamazoo unit is a bit different than the attachment on the Elite. I had been at that site before, vintage machinery, and found some useful info about the grinder, except for setting the drill grinder unit. I performed another search on their site this morning and found some interesting videos on the Sterling twist drill grinder. The Sterling looks like the way to go if funds were plentiful for hobby expenditures. One idea from the video is tilting the grinder head which my unit will do, that may be the missing link, so to speak, on why the geometry is so far off the way the tool now sits in relationship to the wheel. May fire the unit up again tomorrow and give tilting the head a whirl. This afternoon I am being asked to take senior portraits of my oldest grandson so no time to play.

Some more info on the tool and cutter grinder itself can be found here.

By the way I have their manual.
I must say I am getting better response here than the original forum the question was posted on. Again thanks for the replies and input.
