Unknown Collet
Unknown Collet
I've searched thru many collet specs / charts but cannot identify
this collet, although it looks like a common collet.

Re: Unknown Collet
Even the Hardinge catalog doesn't have a match.
And somewhere, someone is probably looking for that collet.

I've looked thru dozens of charts and many jewelers lathe specs
but nothing come close. And it's such a nice looking collet

Re: Unknown Collet
I think that is a shop made collet. When you expand the view, you can see many "tells".
Re: Unknown Collet
I don't see any signs of it being shop made. I'm away now and I'll get the angle tomorrow.spro wrote:I think that is a shop made collet. When you expand the view, you can see many "tells".

Re: Unknown Collet
I was sure it was a W-8 watchmaker's collet but then couldn't prove it. The W8s are 8mm.

Re: Unknown Collet
I have a whole box of 'whatchacallit' collets.earlgo wrote:At last someone has found an example of the elusive 'whatchacallit".
At first, we thought they were Stark (they came in a box with a Stark slide rest).
The collets have a body diameter of 0.679". The threads are 0.680-24tpi. Threads are about 9/16" long and the collets are about 2.4" long.
Shopswarf shows a Stark 3-1/2 collet 0.695x24 threads. Hardinge shows it as 0.690x24tpi. Hardinge has the length slightly longer at 2.563".
The collets are stamped "Van Norman", but the only Van Norman collets shown are Van Norman No. 5 (5V) and Van Norman No. 112 (20V), and both are too big.
Tony Griffith:
http://www.lathes.co.uk/vannorman/
mentions Van Norman 3 and 3-1/2 lathes, but doesn't indicate what collets they take.
The angle (on one side) is about 15 degrees. Steve
Re: Unknown Collet
Steve do you still have your whatchacallets? A friend just got a Stark 3 1/2 and might be interested if the price is right.

Re: Unknown Collet
I still have them.
I suspect they could work if you made your own drawbar to the necessary length.
