Yeah, I gave up and filed for a refund with PayPal. We'll see what happens. This is the first time I've had to do that....

The issue has been resolved, for me anyway, by PayPal. I opened a Dispute, submitted the information including data from here and other sites, and they have retrieved my money.

The process worked!!!

Yes, it is sad. The fellow seemed to have some very good knowledge to share. We all lose priceless talent when this happens. I wish I'd known the fellow....
