Using a 7x12 Seig S2 mini lathe. ( that's a 3 1/2 inch lathe in the UK) I recall it's about 350watts. I use coated carbide triangular inserts with positive rake and have no trouble with .030 inch DOC in steel and aluminum. I've pushed it to .050 at times.
