Yes, you just need to get the weight off of the balls.

OK, anything I should specifically inspect? It is coming out of a metrology lab.

$500 seems like an OK price, but I'm not familiar with grinders, brands, and typical issues.

It's an electromagnetic chuck.

I'd have to use a VFD.

Oh yeah, a Titan 1 ton pickup should be able to haul that, right? I have no idea how I'd get it off. My engine hoist probably won't cut it... No trees to sling from either.

First off not all grinders have ball ways ,some are plain and some have needle rollers. If anything other than plain ways you need to support table off the ways. In either case crank the spindle down onto a block of wood against the table. Also using table stops adjust so table can;t move . There are several ways the manual table feed works ,rack and pinon or cable drive. Grinders need to be lifted from the base!!! Also if this machine has power table feeds [hyd?] disconnect the X axis before raising table.

I went to see it as I promised the seller. It is a Thompson with automatic table feed.

I don't know what I was thinking, I should have just emailed the guy with a payment, sight unseen. I fear there are machine re-dealers in this area and it was sold pending payment before I got there.

A nice crew otherwise and they are selling a few other machines (mills/lathes).

Anyway, if the deal falls through I might have a shot.

I missed this one, but he is offering an excellent Chevalier that sold for $8K new for $3k.

That may be the deal of a lifetime, but seems outside a reasonable learning newb's budget, yes?

I also missed the older Chevalier 618 that started this.

I'll keep looking and something inspirational will strike, I'm sure...

Ctwo, as far as unloading, once you get a machine home. I have use a tow truck with an extending boom to unload both my mill and lathe into my garage/shop. I works well and is reasonable in cost. Just a thought.

My very ugly Boyer Schultz 612 Challenger was had for $100. It needed the spindle rebuilt, and some other stuff, but the ways were in good shape. I run it with a VFD, but set up only for normal maximum speed, and it works like a champ. I find it useful to reduce wheel speed a bit for some things. Sure, it would be nice to have a nicer grinder, but this seems able to do anything I've asked of it.

Just a concept, but imagine if you could have a rod connected to a switch, that poked through the back of the wheel guard. With a standard sized wheel, the rod couldn't come forward and the switch couldn't be activated. With a small wheel the rod could be pulled out, activating the switch. The switch would enable higher speed ranges for small diameter wheels. Not sure how to actually do it, but it would somewhat idiot proof things.

A benchtop surface grinder has popped up. What'da think of that? $650 with a B&S magnetic chuck.

At first I suspected it was home built using a lathe milling attachment for the vertical, but then where would the table come from?

What would not be an insulting offer?
