Machinist-Specific Cell Phone Problem

Today I installed a new charge port cover on my Samsung Galaxy S5 phone. To do this, I had to take off the back. When I did that, I saw a small, shiny, perforated panel down near the mouth end. It had some kind of debris on it. When I finished fixing the cover, I poked the debris with my finger, and it turned out to be iron or steel filings. The panel must cover a speaker or mike or both, and there is apparently a magnet in there that attracted the filings.

I held the phone against a rare earth magnet a few times to draw the filings out.

Wondering...do any of you have the same problem? You might not even know it. If you've ever put your phone down on a work surface, it could have sucked up some junk. Those filings can't be great for the phone.

Note, that at no time, can chips enter my bottle of Bud Light.

And why? Because I plan ahead.....

I had this problem with my S4 and did the same thing you did with a magnet. I think that is what killed my speaker, also. Now I am more careful about where my phone ends up, while in the shop.

Yes, both the normal handset speaker at the top and the speakerphone along the bottom edge have a powerful magnet core. My cell phones frequently pick up little bits of metal in my pockets, particularly grindings from running the angle grinder. Pick the bigger pieces out, brush out the medium pieces, blow out the really fine bits. Normally I'm cleaning the pocket lint/etc out of the headphone/charging/etc. jacks at the same time.

How does Bud Light perform as a lubricant/coolant on aluminum? A friend of mine uses Busch Light (not on machines). I might try some of that, since I believe it is even cheaper than Bud Light.

Doesn't work well for a lubricant or coolant on any metals Bill, but it IS a great tolerance tightener for the machinist!

I didn't realize there was a legitimate use for Bud Light. I'm also surprised no one has piped up with the "tools and alcohol" lecture yet. I must admit; on certain days I have endangered my safety with as many as TWO delicious beers.

My old laptop heats up so much, I lay a cold brew left of the mouse pad. Talk about not wasting beer. Talk about magnets near electronics; it was always forbidden and now, no big deal. Oh I see about tapes and hard drives but the mini ICs became impervious to that?
