I'm glad you said I wasn't crazy. This ties into what Steve G. said about it being a lazy Acme for pipe. Those chairs and other stuff didn't have an actual Acme nut. The pipe was threaded somewhere between.

Evan, a popular/controversial member over on the other HSM board made nuts by heating the screw and forming UHMPE (I think it was?) over the screw. Seems that's how he build the screws for his home brew lathe. Anyway, I don't recall the exact details, but he gave the impression it worked out quite well. You should be able to find the thread by searching over at the other site. I think it was at something like 6 years back.

Ok, I did read that over at HSM, never knew that it was named after him.
