It's as long as it is because it also engages the taper attachment.
Later models (or models based upon a similar concept) used a two piece crossfeed rod - that enabled the taper attachment to be easily removed.

Great Ed. No internal splines. If you tell me that you want to reproduce the thread to fit a worn nut, no you didn't.. An accurate thread at the cross slide is a precise register. I wouldn't be surprised if the cross nut has some adjustment to it. This can work very well without a person cutting Acme threads along the length.

The nut doesn't have any adjustment, sad to say. It is also pretty worm and would be replaced at the same time.
