Mini-insert Cutoff Tool Question

Post by gwrdriver »

I inherited some tooling which included a Nikcole (#THE-7-1/2R) holder and cutoff insert and a test cut was brilliant, and badly needed tooling.
I have a toolpost block I'll dedicate for use with this but I'll need to shim the holder up to correct height.
So, what should correct height be for such an insert? One would assume spot-on lathe C/L, but I don't know much about inserts.

Nikcole make great tooling Harry and I've got a couple of those mini cut off tools. Fwiw I set mine up at my lathes C/L and they seem to work just fine even on my little Emco C5 lathe. Your Harrison should do far better with them.

I always set them on turning center line.
Worked fine, all the time.
Excellent for slotting.

Yup, on center.
I've made many o-ring & snap ring grooves with mine.
Today's solutions are tomorrow's problems.

That's what I assumed, but you never know, so I thought I'd better ask.
Thanks for the confirmation.

I got a pile of Thinbit toolholders and bits.

They come in HSS, C5 and C6 carbide, in different widths for grooving and threading.

I have used the threading bits, but not the grooving bits, but I suspect that when it comes time to cut a groove, these are going to come in VERY handy.
