Best Hand-Held Tool for General Buffing?

Now that I'm a great expert on bench buffers, I have a question.

It is unsafe to buff inside things with a bench buffer, so what's the best tool for that job?

I have an air buffer, which is more or less like an air die grinder. I'm not that thrilled with it. It works well, but my 17-CFM compressor can't keep up with it. I'm thinking maybe an electric die grinder is the best tool for the job.

Buffing is a relatively low-speed operation. Die grinders typically turn at very high RPM and would, in my opinion, be wholly unsuitable for buffing.

That's interesting, because my air buffer really flies. It seems to work better than a drill, which is slower.

I see that some die grinders have variable speed, and the buffing implements are fairly small, which would reduce surface speed.
