If my dad didn't have one of everything, it's because he had two.
Many of those things are "what the h&%# is this?" variety.
This is one of those.
This thing is a brass tube about 10" long, with a mounting bracket, and something sticking out of one end the tube that is attached to the inside of the other end of the tube.
There is some adjustment screw / lock on the exposed end.
It appears to be something that provides some force to the pad on the end of the screw, and you can adjust it with the screw.
I had thought it might have something to do with sound and vibration, but it really doesn't ring like a tuning fork.
Any ideas?

I'm sure it was a custom jig to hold something, I've made custom jigs to do jobs and if someone comes along later and finds it, without knowing what it was made for. They'd be mystified.
Re: Another "What is it?" post
It's pretty fancy for a one-off custom jig.
The knobs have rope knurling.
My guess is that it is a production piece, but long ago, people would have gone what we would consider over the top with details, like engine turning on a wood plane, that we would just consider a waste of time.

one of these days, someone is going to look at a manual engine late and say 'wazzat?'

Too many things going on to bother listing them.

I came across this sort of thing. Photography enlargement or where the camera was focused downward. Lightweight yet did something.

My guess is it is an adjustable stop made back at a when machinists put extra detail into what they were making. The knurled nut would lock the screw after setting.

I kinda agree with reubenT it's a adjustable length holding / clamping thing,
the "bone" shaped flat piece looks like it attaches to a flat surface.
Does the part with the rope knurled knobs extend out ?
Looks like it does.

The knurled thing does screw in and out.
