Another drum switch wiring question.

Post by CHARL »

I’m trying to wire a 115v drum switch for a South Bend lathe I’m fooling with. It should be easy, right? I’m an electrical idiot! I’d really appreciate any help.

I could be mistaken but that does not look like a reversible motor. Have any more pics of the nameplate?

Ok, you have me puzzled. I am guessing that you want the motor to be reversing.

I am either seeing too much or not enough information? Is the diagram labeled motor wiring diagram for the actual motor? Somewhere there should be a note that says to reverse, swap leads AA and BB or whatever their respective numbers are. Those leads should be the ones for the Start coil in the first diagram labeled drum switch. Possibly one wire from the #5 group and one wire from the #6 group?

About as far as I can go.

It is reversible. The diagram says to interchange red and black to reverse.

Then those are the ones that get connected to terminals 2 and 5 on the drum switch, your third picture.

Russ has me confused. This could be totally wrong - or right...

Motor Red (or black) on 1 of drum switch
Motor Black (or red) on 4 of drum switch
Motor White and Yellow to 2 of drum switch
Motor Yellow with trace to 5 of drum switch
Connect motor leads brown and orange together
Connect Hot source to 6 of drum switch
Connect neutral source to 2 of drum switch

Do not put a jumper between 3 and 5 of drum switch

Use at your own risk. Swap the black and red wires if the direction is opposite of desired
