okay, heattreated the strange size tap

Post by gezr »

and it worked, It accually cut a nice threaded hole, which makes me proud now.
size. 5/16 10 square threaded tap 4 inches thread lenght,
heat source, propane torch. what about those map gas torches?? this set I bought was about 26 bucks, and I thought it would do the job just fine.
quenching bath hot tap water with some aditional torching to bring it up a bit more so when heating the part it would still be warm
heated part evenly to a dark cherry red where my magnet would no longer stay attached.
quenched part in the water bath.
It seems to be much harder then it was, yet not brittle. or doesnt apear to be. Its however hard to cut with a file, file seems to glide on the surface
Im very pleased with what I have produced, now its time to make the 3/8 10 sq left and right hand taps. I cant wait to see if i can obtain similiar results.
time to get back to the cut.
