3 jaw chucks

Post by MikeL »

Why are plain back 3 jaw chucks normally supplied with tapped holes on the back side for mounting?

Every 3 jaw I've taken apart has enough material for through holes and socket head capscrews counterbored into the front face. It seems like it is much easier to put a SHCS through the front and tighten it from the front than it is to put a bolt through the back of the mount and into the back of the chuck.

I've modified many 3 jaw chucks to have screw holes going all the way through the body. In some case the back may not have access to get to bolt heads, so this is required - mounting the 3 jaw to a rotary table for instance.

Just curious.
