Opions on Grizzly G0519 Mill/Drill/Tapping Machine?

Post by Phil Joines »

I'm looking for a bench mill (don't have much space or cash to dedicate to this) to use in making some wood working tools. Mostly milling flats on round bar up to 1 1/2" dia. and then drilling and tapping holes in the flats. It seemed to me faster to be able to do all the operations with only needing to mount the stock once. Has anyone used a VFD to power one of these?

Also, what's a good book on using a mill? I haven't used one before.

Thanks.

I have it under consideration, talked to a couple of owners, they were pleased.

One fellow had a VFD on his, quite pleased with it.

Milling books-
A good all rounder, that was the textbook at my machine shop class, is
"Machine tool practices" by Richard Kibbe and others, John Wiley books.
Kibbe also has a smaller book, called Milling Machine Operations, also published by Wiley.

Then there is "Machining Fundamentals" by John Walker, published by Goodheart Wilcox.

All of these are often found used at Abebooks.com

Thanks guys

I'll check out the books.
I've found a gentelman with a small shop who is willing to teach me the basics.
