Are you asking about a definition of VFD?
Is that a book for dummies?

I don't know anything about them, and want to learn.

http://www.automationdirect.com used to have some info on-line about VFDs.

Or try http://www.practiclmachinist.com and browse through the section on transformers, RPCs, and VFDs. Lots of good info there.

Pete;

Below is my old Walker-Turner drillpress with 3/4 hp 3-phase motor.
Image

A VFD (mounted to wall) takes 240V single phase and runs the 3-phase motor. Not only does it run the motor but makes the motor variable speed and reversable. The step pulleys are there for more power or more speed. 90% of the time the drive belt remains on the mid-range set of pulleys and speed changes are made on the VFD.

There is also a red pushbutton (foot actuated not shown) that reverses the drillpress when tapping. A very nice feature. No need for a tapping head now.

I bought the VFD from Dealers Electric in 2003 for about $180. The VFD comes with a manual that explaines all the possible settings.

If I can wire up and program a VFD then so can you.

Go to driveswarehouse.com and start looking at all the infor they post for Hitachi drives. You may have to select a drive, then click on the link to the quick reference book and the full instruction manual. Not really books for the dummies, but are you sure you really fit that description???

The "Practical Machinist" website has a forum/board dedicated to VFD's.

http://www.practicalmachinist.com/vb/fo ... y.php?f=11

PM's "South Bend" board had a posting on it before the end of last year that may be provide some help.... It may provide a good start with discriptions/definitions.

You might try the CNC Zone website's "Rotory Phase and VFD" forum as well. Don't know if it will have too much elementary type stuff on it though. You may have to register at CNC Zone to be able to look at all the pictures attached to their forum's postings. The VFD board is at.
