Back in what us old farts refer to as 'the good old days', the gyroscopic instruments in our aircraft had gyroscopes driven by vacuum. Normally the vacuum was provided by an engine driven pump, but an emergency backup source was provided by the use of a venturi mounted on he outside of the fuselage. After landing and engine shutdown, you could hear the gyroscope running for what seemed like ages. Possibly, you could scour some of the older surplus stores a find one of these instruments to use as a model.

Vacuum

Driven BY a vacuum or operating IN a vacuum?

IN a vacuum is one of the things Sperry did back in 'old fart' days

I don't know what the exact arrangement was but I do know that vacuum DRIVEN gyros were the norm in aircraft instruments for a long time and many are still in service.

If I remember correctly, there were little "cups" on the rim. Should be pretty simple with end-mill cutter.

Once you get your gyroscope built, see if you can make it into a gyrocompass. The concept is described here...

I had a relative who made a gyroscope out of the flywheel off of a hay bailer. Then he cut up a car to put it in. It only had two wheels side by side. The gyro kept it up when it moved. Not practicle for anything but parrades. but a real attention getter.

That scares me just thinking about !

Sounds more like a flywheel-inertia-propelled car than a gyroscope.
