Hello folks,

I have a stainless steel sheave that I need to bore and press in a plain steel bushing. The OD of the bushing is 1.250
What would be the proper bore diameter in the stainless for proper press fit?

thanks!

Assuming the OD is 1.250", 1.249"/1.247" housing diameter.

Also important, is the ID of the bushing...it's gonna get smaller.....

Bill

Edit..... 1.247" was 1.246" oops..... (fat fingers)

It depends on the purpose of the bushing. If it's a bronze or oilite type bushing I'd do a 1.250 bore-fit for fit. But if it's a re-size for the sheave I'd go for a tighter press in say 1.249+5 -0.
Just my 2 cents worth (at present exchange rate).

Rule of thumb is .001 per inch of diameter so bore to 1.2485-1.249 . And a bit depends on bushing material and the bushing wall thickness. The bushing ID will tighten up some ,how much depends on press interference and bushing wall. .002 interference and a thick wall a 12 ton press will be needed.

Here's a chart from Bunting Bronze. The tolerances work with steel as well.
