I would like to be able to move my chuck from my lathe to my dividing head, with a part still in it. The lathe has a 2 14X8" threaded spindle and the dividing head has a 1 1/2X8" threaded spindle. I was thinking about turning an adapter for this. How well would this work if at all. I am concerned about run out, moving it from one spindle, with out and adapter, to another with an adapter.
What do you all think of this plan?
What are the pitfalls?

If you make an adapter that fits both features, and includes the proper registers (close fitting), it should work quite well.

Do ensure that if you elect to make the adapter that you provide for a means for removal from the chuck if it happens to remain in the bore when the chuck is removed from the dividing head.

Considering you are new at machining, that the entire adapter be made in one setup, including chasing the threads, may not be obvious to you, but by doing so, you won't introduce any error to the assembly. That may require a home built plug gauge for the internal thread, and you should be able to rely on wires for the external thread. If you observe the proper thread profile, you may be able to use three drill blanks (off the same, and appropriate size) for wires, assuming you don't have a set of PeeDee wires at your disposal. Measure the threads on the lathe spindle and duplicate the diameter on the adapter.

I have only given the idea minimal thought at the moment. I am going to order a set of Pee Dee wires, as I have run into the measuring problem already. I could machine in a set of, spanner wrench, holes that would allow for, proper registering, and a means of removal, with out increasing the length of overhang.

This project is far from the top of my priority list, at the moment, but is something I have been thinking about.
Thanks

An excellent observation on the overhang. Do keep things as short as you possibly can.

I've been considering making the exact same adapter. I have a Hardinge 5C collet chuck (handwheel type) on my Enco 1024 that I would like to use on a SB 9A.
Keep us posted if you do it.

I've made a few nose adapters for the same reasons. I did the internal threading on the most accurate lathe. Then fitted to the smaller machine and threaded and finished it right there. I made some out of brass. My reasoning at the time was any error in thread finish would not alter the origional chuck or nose threads for the brass would "give a little".
