Southbend 9 inch lathe problem

Post by Brian Tusin »

I have a problem with my 9 inch Southbend lathe. The knob that controls the power feed and cross feed is no longer working. If I try to use it for the cross feed the knob keeps turning and won't engage the cross feed. Now when I have the lever in the top position to move the carriage down the knob spins when I move the carriage down the bed. I can not turn it to engage the power feed. I have no idea what happened. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thank you,
Brian

Hi There,

The SBL 9 inch (and 10K) have a very simple clutch in the apron.
Take the apron off and remove the sheet metal cover on the inside.

Check the hair pin spring separator between the two shoe expanders.

If you need to disassemble the clutch, you have to remove the star
clutch engagement knob. The screw in the center has Left Hand Threads.
The knob itself has right hand threads.

You can get a schematic of the apron HERE.

Good Luck!

Thank you Webb! I was hoping I did not have to take it off but it seems there is no choice.
