Newbie here

Post by pewter »

Hi all,

I have been looking into purchasing a lathe for a while now. I have no experience as a machinist but would love to get into it as a hobby. Hoping to learn a lot from the site and hopefully over the course of learning I will be able to make fly fishing reels.

Thanks,
Pewter

Welcome! You may not be aware of this, but new guys are required to send each of us 25 bucks.

Heh!

Well, if that's true, I'm still waiting for mine, from you, Steve! Cash, please. I do not accept personal checks.

Pewter has come to the right place. We're very good about supporting the newbie here, and there's already members who make custom reels, so they can exchange views and encourage one another.

Pewter, as a point of reference, do a search for posts by RSG . He has posted pictures of several of his custom reels. His workmanship is superb.

Thanks for the welcomes! LOL Steve, I wish I could afford sending everyone 25 bucks.

Harold, wowzers... I am sure whatever RSG is using to make those reels I cant afford. PLUS I dont have the time it would take to make anything nearly close to those reels.

Welcome to the site! Adding your location to your profile, if you wish, may help in getting additional help from members that otherwise can not be gained via messages on the interweb. We arent looking for your home address, but state, county, or city is nice. It is interesting to see the where abouts of whom you are talking to. To do so click on control panel in the upper right hand corner of the page. Then click on profile in the left hand box, and add the information in the appropriate box. Make sure to click submit at the bottom of the page to save the information.

At the outset, that may appear to be true, but his reels are made as a result of his acquired skills, not due to expensive equipment. The work he has accomplished can be achieved with basic equipment, the very way his work is accomplished. It's the skill you lack, and that can be acquired by study and experience.

All of this will come in to focus as you progress. Set your goals high. Aspire to be the best. That attitude has served me well in life.

Welcome to the board Pewter.
The cost of equipment is not always what it seems, I am an example of that. I believe that the most valuable thing in acquiring equipment is patience and diligence. Diligence in the search, by checking Craigs list everyday, as the good deals go to the fastest to reply. My mill and lathe cost me $1,800.00 for the pair.

Good luck in the search.

Thank you everyone. I do not have any equipment but looking at the Grizzly SKU: G0602 10x22 lathe. If I was to pursue this hobby I want to make sure if I did venture off to make a reel I have a lathe that can support a 4.5" Diameter round bar.

I added my location, thanks for all the replies :)
