L tapers work excellent and have large pass through. Wrenches are easy to make or buy... and yes you need a wrench.. not good for spindle nose, chuck, or work to run loose.

But my Clausing 59XX and the spare headstock I have does not use a standard L00 wrench. The wrench I bought from him fits my Le Blonde dual drive like a glove...
I think the wrench I use is a Proto 1/2" pin 3-3/4 pin wrench.
