Looking for a manual for COLCHESTER CHIPMASTER

Post by wally318 »

I'm in the process of closing a deal on a Colchester chipmaster lathe, and
having it shipped here.
If anyone has an extra manual that they'd sell or a copy in a printable
format, would very much appreciate.
Just an extra side question, some of the older Colchesters came with chucks
badged Colchester. Did they make their own chucks at one time, or did another
British company make them?

That is a very cool looking lathe!

Tony Griffiths says he has a "data pack" for the lathe:

Yep, Clausing/Colchester used them a lot. Lots of mid-upper machines came with PB chucks, and having owned a few I can say that within my experience they are absolutely among the best.

Wally, have you determined what the shipping & import costs will be to get that lovely lathe all the way from England to BC?

At first I was after a Colchester Bantam in the UK and I asked around
about SHIP-ments and a fellow at work relocated here from Aussi and
had some business equipment sent here. What he paid 1200.00 for a
ton in bigger package sounded promising. But a few questions he asked
triggered some thoughts about a chipmaster for sale here in Canada.
Meaning no duties. So I looked into it and shipping wasn't that bad.
I'll fill you in a bit more on the details when the lathe is shipped and
gets here.

The Harrison 10" type AA is almost identical to the Colchester, in fact I believe that Colcester is just a re-badged Harrison.

Here is a site for a PDF Manual for that Harrison.

Thanks for the links to manuals.
Lawrence yours doesn't seem to work.
Ronald yours works.
And yes a Harrison 10AA is a rebadged Chipmaster,
acording to Tony @ Lathes.UK

For many of the years that I attended the International Machine Tool Show (IMTS), I would stop at the REM booth and drool over that Harrison 10" AA, it was my dream to own one. Finally, in 1994, at what is now called the International Manufacturing Technology Show (IMTS), I had enough gumption to purchase a Harrison, but by that time they no longer sold the 10 AA, so I bought the Harrison VS330TR, (13") which cost me as much as a small new car.

Alas, REM long ago gave up as the Rep for Harrison, but IMTS 2016 is about to take place, and if you can make the trip, you will enjoy every minute there. Wear good walking shoes!

I have an early Chipmaster - the main difference is the clutch system. The variable speed drive died in mine from old age and it sounded like a coffee grinder. I replaced it with a VFD and a 4hp, 960 rpm (6 pole) motor, which is overdriven to75-80 Hz. This gives the speed range, and with a higher than standard power, it will also run at low speed without losing the torque when running at less than mains frequency. It was second hand but new. It just fits in the space. There is a remote control panel above the headstock with a readout for speed, power switch and speed knob which is a 10kohm pot. The VFD is inside the cabinet by the motor.
